Layer 3 VPN is built and delivered on OSI Layer 3 networking technologies, the Network layer. In a Layer 3 VPN, each side of the connection is on a different subnet, and IP packets are routed through the VPN.
A Layer 2 VPN is similar to a cable connecting two switches in separate buildings. The VPN handles all of the basic properties of an Ethernet network: learning MAC addresses, replicating broadcast and multicast frames, etc. A Layer 2 VPN can also be used to create a stretched LAN between your site and a cloud server or infrastructure.
A Layer 2 or Layer 3 VPN can be delivered over 4G/5G LTE to enable temporary site offices or installations where only wireless broadband is available. It is also useful as a stop gap until a wired connection is delivered by an ISP.
What is a Site-to-Site VPN?
A site-to-site VPN allows offices in multiple locations to establish secure connections with each other over a public network such as the internet. Site-to-site VPN extends the company’s network, making computer resources from one location available to employees at other locations.
Who Needs a Site-to-Site VPN?
A site-to-site VPN is beneficial to a growing business with several branch offices around the nation or across the world. For example, a London-based consultancy firm opens branch offices in Birmingham, Paris, Rome and New York with 10 to 20 employees at each location who need to access email, a shared file server, and other network resources at the central office. The network demands of 10 to 20 employees at each location would be relatively small to justify the cost of a dedicated, leased internet line at each site. A site-to-site VPN would link all of the branch offices together with only the cost of a local internet connection.
